... or are these things always out of order?
My tire pressure sensor was on this morning, so I decided to swing by the gas station and top them all off. Anyone care to venture how many gas stations I had to visit before finding a functioning air compressor?
First of all, whatever happened to free air? When I worked for a gas station in high school, checking on our (free) air compressor was a daily task. We had parts on hand to repair if needed. I realize these are all contracted out to independent operators these days, but more often than not, they are out of order. Do they not care about the lost income? If the stations don’t care enough about their customers to make sure their air and water is operable, why should I give them my fuel/snack business?
I visited two in a row with quarters jammed in the slot! Simply offering free air would solve that problem. ANGER!

Around me I know where all the free air is.
But, that being said, I've also been known to use a bike pump. It might take a little longer, but it gets the job done in a pinch.

1. the air isn’t free at the gas station I stop at
2. The paid compressor doesn’t work or is insufficient to raise my pressure
The frustration is palpable. Seriously, these times are angry times.

My biggest complaint is when the damn thing runs out when I have ONE tire left. I’m supposed to pay to run the thing a 2nd time for just 1 tire?! I’m not on a NASCAR crew here, I don’t make it around that quick.

Just go to the closest dealership and cry about the light being on like every other customer.
Get it topped off for free.

I stopped at a Maverick the other day to fill up trailer tires and I couldn’t get one...ONE up to pressure per fee.

Not a bad idea at all. I have a slow leak so I need to do this about once a week. I’m putting off getting new tires because I’m in the market for new wheels anyway. A temporary frustration I suppose.

Put some Fix-A-Flat in there. The next guy to take your tires off will LOVE YOU.

My warnings went off as I was headed to an Appt, I was late because it took me 7 gas stations to find one that worked! I hate Maryland.
The pumps are free on a Military base and one has the fancy pump where you tell the machine what PSI you want the tire and and it beeps when it reaches the pressure. It is awesome!

It’s you.
I always get free air. I can’t remember the last time I saw air for sale.

do you have a Sheetz by you? they have a digital air pump that’s free. you tell it what PSI you want, and it will fill it up and then stop once it gets there.

When I was in college the gas station I went to had air hoses at every pump. It was awesome!...hilariously they also had one of these machines. I never saw anyone but myself using the free air, but lots of folks using the pay machine.
After moving away I got super frustrated with those broke things and just picked up a little hot dog air compressor at a pawn shop for like 15 bucks. Haven't touched one in years except for once when I picked up a nail on a business trip...thing ate my money and gave no air...cashier was clueless...ended up just putting on the spare rather than dealing with that crap.

It’s probably regional. There is no free air at gas stations near me. But, if you go to an actual shop, they’ll always fill it for free....then ask you if you want them to re-seat your tire for $10.

Pretty much just your major brands. And a discount chain called “Major Brand” but I steer clear of that sketchy place.

I bought a 15$ 12v air pump from walley world for this reason, its a piece of crap but it beats constantly broken gas station ones.

There’s one at the gas station near my house that takes credit cards. It has worked every time I went to use it. It also has a digital read out where you input your desired psi, so no more need to continually check with a gauge. It’s $2 though, so that’s a little steep.

The one pictured had a card option but I was in full F this S mode at the time and was not going to give them my dollar.
